Week 1: How Digital Marketing has saved us in the pandemic

How digital marketing has saved us in the pandemic
Blog 1: 22/7/2020

It can be argued, that no industry has experienced the disruption and revolution of technology more than digital marketing. Businesses are being forced to reinvent themselves to stay competitive and as a result  many brands have found solitude in the the online market place. Moving online has  allowed them to strengthen relationships with their existing customers whilst also engage with a far greater audience. More importantly, by asserting themselves online armed with an impactful online strategy, many brands have been able to endure ongoing economic turmoil and ultimately stay relevant to a large proportion of their consumers who are no longer visiting physical stores.

So what is digital marketing you may ask?
Well, digital marketing plays a vital role in how information & technology is communicated to consumers and organisations in order to deliver superior value(WAGs 2014). There is no doubt that such an evolution is designed to simplify the means of how consumers seek and purchase goods and services.  Just as CD players were the precursor to more revolutionary products like I-pods and now products such as the Google Home device, it is the tool that has spurred innovation to facilitate the new age of consumer purchasing.
It is evident that digital marketing has assisted in levelling the competitive playing field of the current marketplace,  no longer do a few brands capture the attention of the  public alone, instead consumers have access to a plethora of options,  enabling consumers to make informed decisions before purchasing.

I have to look no further than my current job as an account c-ordinator for a marketing/media firm where innovative digital marketing solutions has  played a imperative role in helping brands stay relevant. The fact that incredible importance  has been given to constantly understanding and applying new and dynamic ways to leverage the digital marketing space is credit to its importance. Marketing firms and brands alike are focusing on this online medium because it is the best way to gain  and control consumer attention  in the current climate. The current pandemic has been a further catalyst to the  gradual shift that has been happening over the last decade. An example of this is how brands have shifted away from predominantly OOH adverts to  social media based promotions.
From my experience working with one of our biggest clients, New Balance Australia, a key objective has  been promoting their warehouse/sale products online and investigating diverse methods to gain online traction and digital engagement on their website.  As a result,  some effective ways I have found to deliver superior consumer value is through 'VIP member sales', promoting 48 hour free shipping deals and utilising prominent social media influences to advocate for new release products.
Here is an example of an eDM I created in order to endorse New Balances new Optiks apparel using bright and captivating content to engage their target audience.

Throughout these uncertain times, digital marketing has inspired me to transform and adapt as a marketing student. Shopping online is a game-changer for consumers,  I have even found myself sometimes making impulsive purchases, which I'd like to give credit to the power of digital marketing rather than my online shopping addiction!  Understandably more businesses are expanding into online forums to promote products and services that are just one click away.

Therefore I pose the question to you; have you observed a greater presence of businesses shifting to digital marketing to stay relevant? What tactics have you recognised as a successful way in captivating an audience?

  1. Hi Indi,

Great read! You're right many businesses have found themselves forced to adapt and adopt an online presence or be left behind! As much as it annoys me, I think that the most successful way to capture audience attention is through social media advertising, eg. on Instagram or Facebook. I think that this is particularly useful for product based businesses as it can hopefully stimulate spontaneous impulse purchases.

    1. Hey Jesse, thanks for your feedback.
Indeed, Instagram and Facebook have revolutionised how businesses can deliver value to consumers especially with product based businesses. Whilst id like to hope traditional marketing may make a comeback, unfortunately it is a harsh reality that businesses are shifting away from mediums such as magazines and newspapers into cheaper and more readily available mediums online.

  2. Hey Indi,

Great post, I feel like a lot of businesses are moving online to survive these harsh times. I've seen a lot more collaborations as a result of this, making sure to engage their consumers in a new way. I know that for my gym, they have adopted a new app to help us continue to train as well as live stream coaching with celebrity athletes. This is an effective way to keep us members engaged and increase brand loyalty. It's been very exciting to see what brands are doing to stay relevant and gain traction during this time.

    1. Hey Naomi,

What a fantastic initiative of your gym to incorporate online forums to keep people active when they can't physically enter a gym. Integrating celebrity athletes is a sensational way to engage an audience, and maintain brand loyalty especially when gyms have been at the forefront of economic downturn through this period.

    Hey Indi,

A fantastically written first post. It is great to get these insights from someone who is not only a student, but also works in the industry.
I think you're spot on in saying that a VIP program is a great way to deliver value to customers who have already displayed favourable purchase habits. From there, you stand to further increase the loyalty of that customer that will be hard for other brands to match.
A strategy that worked incredibly well on me recently was the coffee subscription from Market Lane here in Melbourne. The treatment that you receive from them feels highly exclusive, and you get a fantastic reminder of this every fortnight delivered right to your door.

I'm looking forward to your future posts and insights!

    1. Hi Josh,

      Thanks for your feedback.

The door to door service has definitely been a game changer in the current market. It's incredibly important to be supporting small businesses like Market Lane through coffee subscriptions and a great way to deliver premium value to the consumer. I am a sucker for a good coffee so I may have to check it out!

  5. Hi Indi,

What a great read! I think it's so interesting how quickly businesses have adapted given the current COVID pandemic. I would agree that a lot of businesses are finding unique and personal ways to reach out to consumers through social media. I find that through brands using digital marketing, I am able to find review and stalk the products that I have my eye on enabling me to make a more informed decision and see whether a product will do what I want it to do.

Can't wait to read your next post!

  6. Really interesting post! I agree with the businesses bringing in the aspect of digital marketing and how it can positively impact a business and its future. For those that don't support this are sadly left behind in this growing industry that relies a lot on social media and getting their brand out there for a high level of engagement to know their business known. Can't wait for more of your posts to come!

  7. Hi Indi,
Loved reading your blog! Great introduction piece and of course, very relevant. I have noticed a huge shift in the way in which businesses have managed to adapt to online platforms and quickly, I think social media has been an important tool for businesses to use whilst still setting themselves up properly online. Even older business owners have, or have someone in their business who has some basic understanding of FB and Instagram which meant they would communicate directly with their customers as to their new trading hours within these restrictions, for example. Once upon a time you would need to walk past a shop front for this information. I would be interested to know the statistics, but I do believe generally people will browse on the web before actually browsing in store even at a time when they could. I know I would check products online before taking the time to go and purchase! Look forward to reading more of your work. Thanks, Sarah

  8. Really insightful, Indi! I have definitely noticed businesses scrambling to adapt to an online presence in order to maintain communication with customers. A prime example that I've seen across countless businesses are cafes and coffee shops utilising social platforms to rework their business model to one that presents adapted product offerings, online orders, and contactless pickup and/or delivery.

  9. Hi Indi,
Great first blog. I agree that businesses are being encouraged to enter the digital landscape in order to remain competitive or risk being left behind (especially now since we can’t enter a physical store). I also really enjoyed your inclusion of some of your own work that you have completed for New Balance it gave your post a great edge. Great work keep it up.
    Thanks Sam
