Week 4: Strava- The Contagious fitness app
Strava, the contagious fitness app!
There is no denying that exercise is socially contagious especially when supported by online social networks designed to glorify and underline its benefits. With the digital world morphing into our everyday lives, it was only a matter of time before we started to see fitness bedevilled by social media gratification.
Since its debut in 2009, Strava has become a prominent fitness tracking app allowing users to build a social network focused on fitness. Amongst the temporary closure of gyms as of 2020, Strava has captured a growing market of fitness enthusiasts who are seeking an alternative ways to stay motivated and active.
So what is Strava?
Strava (Swedish word for strive), was created as a social network that tracks a plethora of exercise regimes using a GPS system which can be used to share activities amongst the users community. Like Instagram, Strava features a following system whereby, you can follow and share your achievements by building a virtual community with like-minded athletes. With an average of 11 million activities lodged each week, Strava is cementing its position as the epicenter of social exercise.
But what makes Strava so remarkable?
What makes Strava so compelling is that it is unlike any other fitness app as it encompasses a range of different activities in one app . Its segmented features allow users to be displayed on a leaderboard inspiring competition and allowing the user to see how they are performing in that particular scope against both friends or strangers. With athletes no longer able to compete with each other in the physical world, many are turning to the app for its social benefits that highlight the physical achievements of highly competitive individuals. Ultimately this medium has digitised the fitness community and acts as a status symbol; celebrating those who can go faster or longer whilst enabling a discussion space for likeminded fitness enthusiasts.
This concept of sharing your achievements with like-minded fitness fanatics has allowed some users to achieve a cult like following and been a life changing tool for those individuals seeking to build relationships and share their journey with a passionate audience. Each post has the opportunity to tell a brief summary or 'story', keeping content fresh and subscribers engaged.
Though this intense devotion to Strava may seem harmless and often funny, the question becomes: can a site dedicated to building relationships around health and fitness become a source of real pain as well as pride?
like any social networking platform, Strava and all its prospective glory has its pitfalls. Many users are beginning to question whether the liberty of exercising is being diminished by the constant need to document our every move. Prompting many users to ask 'if its not on Strava, did it really happen? An addicted person might manifest a compulsive attitude through seeking constant gratification from their peers, willing to push themselves beyond their physical capacity to gain the social currency.
Therefore I ask, do you think Strava creates a positive mentality towards exercise through 'healthy competition' or is it just another platform created for social gratification that could be harmful to users in the long term?
Really enjoyed your blog. Was a very interesting read and you expressed your thoughts very clearly! This Strava app is so interesting. Will have to download! Can't wait to read your next post!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading! Yes I highly recommend, its a good way to remain social when we struggle to connect with friends as a time like this!
DeleteThanks Indi x
Hey Indie,
ReplyDeleteI have seen photos of people creating pictures by exercising on a particular route but I never knew what the app was called or what it was for. I think it is a really interesting concept that Strava have put together. The ability to find like-minded people to yourself definitely would make exercising more fun!
Em
Hi Em,
DeleteIt does encompass the 'social' aspect to exercising which I think we truly need through these unprecedented times!
Really interesting read, Indi. I definitely think the app and those like it have created more consistent exercise patterns amongst users, which is great from a health perspective. However I do have to agree with you that people can find "competition" a more pressuring factor to maintain a social image that reflects high levels of fitness. When I first got Strava to track my running efforts, a family friend added me, and I was very quickly deflated when I saw his average WEEKLY running total was in excess of 100km! Knowing I could never match something like that, I ended up ditching Strava and getting an Apple Watch so that I could measure my fitness privately and without pressure.
ReplyDeleteHi Charlotte,
DeleteYes I completely agree, I had a similar experience which I believe really ruined the 'fun' side of running and made me feel quite deflated knowing I physically would not be able to maintain 100km a week!
Perhaps I should be looking into an apple watch too :)
Thanks Indi x
Really interesting read! I believe its a very interesting app that Strava have created. A great way to get people motivated to work out
ReplyDeleteYes agreed! It is a great way to remain motivated!

Love this post Indi!! Such a innovative idea and great execution. I've seen people that use and love the app. I really think that it's ideas like this that engage consumers.
ReplyDeleteNaomi
Hi Naomi,
DeleteThanks for your feedback, I appreciate it! Yes it does have a very strong cult following who swear by it!
Thanks Indi
I have never heard of strava before and this blog post was very informative. Very interesting to hear both sides- something to think about. Thank you Indi
ReplyDeleteThanks for giving it a read! I believe it is imperative to view both sides of an argument but there are definitely benefits to the app so I do recommended if you enjoy exercising!

Hi Indi,
ReplyDeleteWhat a relevant and engaging post, I’ve definitely seen many more of my friends use this app since the start of covid isolation! It seems that without access to gyms, people are relying much more on apps like strava to create a similar community environment.
As with every social media platform, there is the potential for social gratification to be the main motivation for use. However, might I suggest a third option to answer your question, as I don’t think that strava necessarily creates either social gratification OR healthy competition, but rather (in my experience) serves as a platform for friends to encourage and motivate fitness and healthy movement - often without competition.
Hi Tess!
DeleteYes I agree is does foster a community environment, I agree it is a key way to motivate friends and family which is especially necessary at a time like this !
Thanks for your feedback you make some great points!
Hey Indi,
ReplyDeleteNice blog post! Found this a great read as didn't know about the ins and outs of this app until now.
I think the unhealthy sense of competition that could be harmful to users, might come from the individual user rather than the nature of this application.
It sounds like seeing other people's regular updates and fitness routines will effect some users differently than others; encouraging some, but potentially stressing out others!
I reckon every user would need to find the point at which they feel comfortable with sharing their activity/ having other's activity shared with them.
Hi Angus,
DeleteI agree it definitely would come from the individual but I do believe its further facilitated by the app whether it is intentional or not. I agree it is all about finding a healthy medium which I am sure many users have mastered!
Thanks for your feedback.

Excellent post Indi, such a great topic! As an athlete I think that STRAVA is a great app. Whilst there is the possibility of cheating (going on a ride and loging it as running), I think that it is great to connect athletes, particularly in lockdown. There are many athletes who are unable to train in big groups, due work commitments or geographical difficulties, and STRAVA is a great medium for these athletes to compare their training times and efforts with like minded athletes, to analyse if they are training well or what paces they should be aiming to hit. Whilst I definitely agree that this platform can be harmful long term, and people may always strive to out do each other, at the end of the day an official race is more credible than a STRAVA record. I look forward to your next post :)!!

Hey Jesse!
DeleteIts great to see the perspective of someone who uses the app!
Thats very sneaky that people cheat, which further perpetuates the idea of 'unhealthy competition' .
Thanks for your response :)

Thanks indi - I’ve never heard of Strava before and I love the idea - connecting with like minded people who enjoy getting fit especially when it’s hard to get motivated in these unusual times -
ReplyDeleteHey Indi! Really relatable blog as I just downloaded strava during covid quarantine and was so shocked to see how many people I knew already used it! Originally I found it was a great way to get me out the door and increase my intensity because of that sense of community you talked about, but as time went on I found it actually deterred me from running as it removed that sense of escaping the drainage of social media that the activity of running once allowed me.. nonetheless I would still rate the app very highly as a nice alternative to connecting with my friends (in a more active way) especially when I can’t see them physically! well written post Indi, really made me evaluate my perceptions of the app :)
ReplyDelete-Bridie
Hi Bridie,
DeleteI agree with you that it has facilitated motivation as a way to get outdoors and remain active! Thanks for your feedback very interesting perspective!
Thanks Indi x
What a fantastic post! I have been waiting to download this app! I feel as if there’s a fine line between gratification and actual competition. Gee social media does that
ReplyDeleteHi Louis!
DeleteThanks for your feedback, I think you should trial the app and let me know what you think!
This is such an informative and engaging post! so well written while being an easy read. Such a relevant topic, so many people jumping on the Strava bandwagon.

DeleteYes it is definitely gaining traction more now than ever!
